Profile of Professor Mariela Deliverska

 

Professor Mariela Deliverska is Head of Department of Medical Ethics and Law at the Faculty of Public Health in Medical University – Sofia. She is Vice-President of the General Assembly - the main policy and decision-making body of the Faculty of Public Health in Medical University – Sofia.

Professor Deliverska graduated from the Law Faculty of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, obtaining a master degree in law. During her master degree legal studies, she has been also attending courses at Law Faculty of the National University of Athens "Kapodistrias".

Professor Deliverska holds a PhD degree from the Legal Institute of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. She is Doctor of International Public Law and International Relations. Her legal dissertation topic refers to "The principle of non-discrimination on grounds of human genome".

She has specialised "Public Administration" and "Jurisdiction" at the Legal Faculty of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski ". Holds a Master degree in Public Health and Health Management from the Faculty of Public Health at Medical University - Sofia.

Her professional experience started as legal expert at the Commission for Protection against Discrimination in the Republic of Bulgaria. She has held an expert position at the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Bulgaria in the field of International Legal Cooperation and European Affairs.

In 2013 she was appointed Director of "Science" Directorate at the Ministry of Education and Science. In 2014 has been elected as National Coordinator of the European Union Framework Programme for Research and Innovation "Horizon 2020".

Her professional experience in the healthcare system is linked to the Military Medical Academy, where she held the position of Head of Legal and Regulatory Department.

Since 2015, she was first appointed as associate professor and later a full professor at the Department of "Medical Ethics and Law" at the Faculty of Public Health in Medical University - Sofia.

In 2016, she obtained a degree of “Doctor of Sciences” (DSc.) after defending a thesis on “Rare diseases as object of Public Health. Medico-social, ethical and legal aspects”.

Professor Deliverska is member of numerous prestigious organisations and associations including:

  • European Association of Health Law,
  • Bulgarian Association of International Law
  • National Association of Health Policy and Management.
  • International Forum of Teachers of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics.

She has participated in numerous research teams and has developed research projects funded by Ministry of Education and Science and the Council of Medical Science at Medical University - Sofia.

She is author of three monographic books and co-author in numerous textbooks. Professor Deliverska has collaborated with researchers publishing in the field of medicine, law, bioethics, social studies and public health.

She is member of editorial boards of numerous scientific journals, including:

  • Review Editor at the Editorial Board of Health Economics, a specialty of Frontiers in Public Health
  • Member of the editorial board ‘World Journal of Education’ and ‘Journal of Curriculum and Teaching’, published by Sciedu Press.
  • Member of the editorial team of Global Bioethics Enquiry, the scholarly publication of the UNESCO Chair of Bioethics (Haifa).
